Nieuwenhuis flies solo to victory in the snow
Sunday 10 December 2023
There wasn’t a great deal of excitement in Val di Sole during the men’s race. Joris Nieuwenhuis led from start to finish and claimed his first World Cup success with an impressive solo.
Joris Nieuwenhuis (Baloise Trek Lions) took off like a rocket from the start in Val di Sole. Only Niels Vandeputte (Alpecin - Deceuninck) was able to parry the Dutchman’s fast start. Iserbyt (Pauwels Sauzen - Bingoal), Sweeck (Crelan - Corendon), Wyseure (Crelan - Corendon) and Vanthourenhout (Pauwels Sauzen - Bingoal) all had to right a tricky situation.
Riding all the way to the head of the race was something that could no longer happen. Nieuwenhuis rode flawlessly and found a course in wintry Val di Sole that suited him perfectly. With that, Vandeputte had to let the Dutch rider speed off. However, he did succeed in holding off the chasers. In the battle for place three, it was Joran Wyseure who was able to ride away from World Cup leader Iserbyt and co at the end of the third lap.
Wyseure had found the rhythm and, with the fastest time on lap four, he started to close in on Vandeputte second by second. But the gap could not be closed. Vandeputte managed to secure second spot. But that was far behind the day’s winner, Joris Nieuwenhuis. The Dutchman secured his first victory in the World Cup with his complete domination of the seventh round of the 2023 – 2024 competition. Eli Iserbyt remains leader in the classification.
